How to involve Pets in play

Pets are often a minor thing in TTRPGs and yet everyone wants to have an Owlbear Baby (Thank you Baldurs Gate) or a Dog, Cat, Bird, Snake, Arachnid and so on.We think pets are as stated a minor thing but still believe this is a great topic to talk about since pets can do great things at the table for roleplay and even mechanical reasons, however at the end its really up to you what you do with pets.
